Fall Safety & OSHA Fall Prevention
No matter what field you work in, more people are killed or injured by falling than any other activity on the job. This is especially true in Construction related fields. The experience, training and knowledge that high school students acquire in this part of the curriculum is literally a live changing experience. Understanding HOW to work safely from elevated positions or platforms involves critical thinking skills, inspecting and trusting your equipment.
Some points students must remember for certification:
+ Falls are the leading cause of fatalities & injury according to OSHA
+ Workers must use some method of fall protection if they have potential for falling more than 6 feet
+ You have to maintain 3 points of contact while climbing on a ladder
+ Type 1A ladders have a maximum capacity of 300lbs (worker plus tools)
+ Ladders must extend a minimum of 3 feet past the roof or walking surface & be tied off
+ The highest safe standing level on an extension ladder is the 4th rung from the top
+ Know what the 1 to 4 ratio means for setting up an extension ladder

Construction Rap Song 2009 still the best?
I challenged my Core Fundamental students in 2009 to come up with the best lyrics & production of a song to represent what they had learned about safety in the Construction industry from Module 1 of the book. I am hoping that with 2 Fundamental classes this year, someone will out-shine all the others. We will vote on what group of students win.
Here is the winner of last years contest:
“Gilby’s Rappacore” 2009
Get ready to listen, turn up your speakers
This about safety and we here to teach ya…
Teacher told me “stop playing” I wouldn’t believe ya
Messed around… Now what the heck happened to my sneakers?
Playin’ on the scaffold sitting up high
Acting all stupid thinking he could fly
They told him he’d fall; he thought it was a lie
Messed around fell down, now I’m looking like this guy
When you in da shop wear protection at all times
Lose a toe, a finger, or even end up blind
So before it’s ya time u better be safe
Listen to dis line we about to say…
So no playing with hammers shaking hands with danger
Follow all instructions when we in construction
Don’t play around before ya life get a deduction
So be safe before ya end up with a concussion
